Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in Melbourne.
A Landmark Comeback to Melbourne Park
The event organizers confirmed on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the second round before bowing out in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.
Preparing for the Summer Swing
The tennis star had earlier stated in the month of November her plans to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a special entry, two weeks prior to the Australian Open. Organizers added that Williams is scheduled to participate in Australia's Hobart International a week later, just before the start of play at Melbourne Park.
Her most recent visit in the city was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.
"I am thrilled to be back in Australia and eagerly anticipating competing during the summer season," Williams said. "I’ve had so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to a venue that has meant so much to my career."
