The Tragic Shift Only 12 Months Has Brought in America

Twelve months back, the situation was completely separate. Ahead of the American presidential vote, considerate citizens could recognize America's deep flaws – its injustices and imbalance – but they could still identify it as the United States. A democratic nation. A place where the rule of law held significance. A nation headed by a dignified and decent official, despite his advanced age and growing weakness.

These days, this autumn, numerous citizens scarcely know the land we inhabit. People alleged as undocumented migrants are collected and pushed into transport, sometimes denied due process. The East Wing of the “people’s house” – is being torn down for a grotesque ballroom. Donald Trump is harassing his opponents or supposed enemies and requesting the justice department transfer a huge total of citizen dollars. Armed military personnel are deployed to US urban areas on false pretexts. The military command, relabeled the War Department, has practically liberated itself of routine media oversight while it uses possibly reaching almost one trillion dollars from citizen taxes. Institutions, attorney offices, news companies are submitting from leader's menaces, and rich magnates are handled as aristocracy.

“America, shortly prior to its 250th birthday as the planet's foremost free society, has tipped over the brink into autocracy and fascism,” Garrett Graff, wrote this past summer. “Finally, more quickly than I imagined possible, it occurred in America.”

Each day begins amid recent atrocities. And it's difficult to grasp – and distressing to accept – how severely declined our nation is, and the speed at which it occurred.

However, we understand that the president was duly elected. Following his highly troubling initial presidency and following the alerts associated with the understanding of Project 2025 – even after the president personally said publicly he intended to be a dictator only on the first day – sufficient voters chose him rather than Kamala Harris.

While alarming as today's circumstances are, it's more frightening to understand that we’re only three-quarters of a year into this administration. What will another 36 months of this decline position us? And if that period transforms into a more extended duration, since there is nobody to stop this president from determining that another term is necessary, possibly for security concerns?

Admittedly, all is not lost. We will have congressional elections next year that could create a new balance of power, in case Democrats regain either chamber of Congress. We have elected officials who are attempting to impose a degree of oversight, for example lawmakers who are launching an investigation concerning the try to fund seizure from the justice department.

And a presidential election in the next cycle could initiate the path to healing exactly as the prior selection placed us on this regrettable path.

There are countless citizens protesting in urban areas of their cities, as they did recently at democracy demonstrations.

A former official, stated lately that “the slumbering force of America is stirring”, similar to past following the Red Scare in that decade or throughout the sixties activism or during the Watergate scandal.

On those occasions, the unstable nation ultimately corrected itself.

Reich says he recognizes the indicators of that awakening and notices it unfolding now. For proof, he cites the recent massive protests, the extensive, multi-faction opposition to a broadcaster's firing and the almost universal rejection by reporters to sign government requirements they only publish approved content.

“The sleeping giant perpetually exists inactive till specific greed turns extremely harmful, an specific act so disrespectful of societal benefit, certain violence so disruptive, that he is compelled other than to stir.”

It's a hopeful perspective, and I appreciate the author's seasoned opinion. Possibly he may be validated.

At the same time, the major inquiries endure: can America return to normalcy? Can it reclaim its position in the world and its commitment to the rule of law?

Or must we acknowledge that the national endeavor functioned for a period, and then – suddenly, utterly – failed?

My negative thoughts suggests that the final scenario is accurate; that all may indeed be finished. My positive feelings, however, advises me that we need to strive, through all methods possible.

For me, as an observer of the press, that means urging journalists to live up, more completely, to their mission of overseeing leadership. For different individuals, it could mean working on congressional campaigns, or planning demonstrations, or developing approaches to defend electoral access.

Under twelve months back, we existed in an alternate reality. Twelve months later? Or three years from now? The fact is, we are uncertain. The only option is try to not give up.
