During the bulk of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive inside a mental fortress forged from the recollections of the villain Henry. Their quest for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" has them experience a defining event from Henry's early years—a moment that potentially carries the key to defeating him for good.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Tunnel

After locating Max in the world called Camazotz, Max reveals she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope taken from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.

In this place, they observe a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the act went deeper than a defensive killing.

Similar to other plot points in volume 2, the full story behind the encounter was first explored the theatrical production The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a plane dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who returned in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in Nevada. One of his scientists took experimental components to sell to the Soviets, who were keen to start their own interdimensional projects. That traitor in the tunnel was that very thief.

So, What's in the Case?

Based on what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the container would assuredly have samples of the altered blood. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the kids in Hawkins Lab.

A second theory, the case could have held strange particles that later made its way to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. The stage play explains that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he battles the whispers of a malevolent force, similar to how the character Will was possessed by the entity in season 2.

The Power of Fear

His lasting fear of that cave highlights how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. While he commands the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has overcome his greatest terrors to fortify himself.

Will's growth has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what his enemy truly fears, which could provide a decisive edge in the endgame conflict ahead.
