Shoaib Bashir Earns Unexpected Selection in England's Test Series Squad
The English team has opted for a twelve-player squad just two days before the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a unexpected place.
Bashir's selection indicates that the tourists will delay until the morning of the first Test to determine whether Perth Stadium pitch favor a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the 12-man squad, indicating there are no doubts about either pace bowler’s condition.
The other seamers complete the bowling group, with Carse most likely to be omitted if the spinner enters the final team.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Seamers
The England coach had been anticipated to opt for an pace-only lineup on a ground that has staged several previous Tests.
In those matches, 134 wickets have been taken by seamers, with only a small number to spin bowling.
Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken the bulk, while all visiting spinners together have just a handful.
At a venue known for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, pledged that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team relying on fast bowlers remains the probable choice.
Alternative Choices Weighed
Previously there was rumors that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the side to offer some slow bowling while additionally strengthening the batting lineup.
But McCullum has chosen to keep faith with Bashir, having stated previously that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the Ashes.
Earlier, Nathan Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” adding that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who haven’t done it in the previous in these conditions,” he remarked of slow bowling in matches Down Under.
“I won't reveal my strategies so opponents perform and perform well out here.”
