A group of six oddball but brave children fall into the way of a vast and fearsome supernatural evil that has infiltrated our world from the outer limits of darkness. They have no choice but to wage a lifelong battle confronting it, enduring terror upon terror in the ordeal.

A Resonant Premise with a Distinctive Approach

This describes the premise, in essence, of Stephen King’s novel It (arguably his finest; no arguments). It similarly frames of King’s son Joe Hill’s latest chilling tome, in which a close-knit group call forth the age-old, utterly malevolent beast the Dragon King from the Endless Night to help them defeat some antagonists. Needless to say, their arcane ceremony backfires.

Embracing a Authorial Legacy

Joe Hill launched his profession making great efforts to remain separate from his famous father, adopting the nom de plume he continues to employ and avoiding meeting his agent (he bears a striking resemblance to his father). However, in his newest work, he fully acknowledges it. Certain passages that deliberately echo some of King’s most famous (the famous Dark Tower introduction); a incident that recalls a signature King element (a riddling contest). Throughout this massive book, Hill is delighting in his family connection, and the audience revels alongside.

Introducing the Main Characters

The dragon will undoubtedly remove those annoying regional antagonists, but they are required to pick a different victim each year or succumb to the dragon’s wrath. As Arthur later puts it: “You invoke terrible forces, all you get is more dragons.”

Narrative Dexterity and Inventive Range

Moving through four decades, Hill also moves with effortless ease between genres: as the allies endeavor to address the circumstances they find themselves in by, through diverse methods, picking people who are obviously evil to sacrifice, or searching for methods to kill the dragon themselves, we transition from thriller to dark fantasy, clandestine torment to love story to fright. My favorite genre switch was to a quest story, deep in the caves below Cornwall, a segment sprinkled with JRR Tolkien that was wonderfully frightening.

A Rich Tapestry of Horror and Hope

We encounter trolls – bridge-dwelling ones and internet antagonists, genuinely frightening and expertly realized. The story includes mystic weapons and betrayals, breath-taking moments of valor and scenes of appalling malevolence, both human and otherworldly. It’s a tour de force: a horror novel that is primarily a tribute to the human inventiveness, and to love and friendship. “We longed for a tale to embrace and {now we’ve got one|presently we possess it|currently we hold it,” says Colin as the companions assemble around a surface, making preparations to call forth their dragon into being with the strength of their collective will.

According to Joe Hill in his opening statement: “Hic sunt dracones”. Do not overlook this.
