Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's CEO Exits After Shift Into Chicken.
A boss of Domino's Pizza Group who proposed the United Kingdom might have reached peak pizza while expanding the franchise into poultry items has been replaced after disagreements with its board.
Executive Shake-Up
Andrew Rennie is leaving after just two years in the top role, and will be replaced on an acting basis by the organization's operations head, Nicola Frampton, while Domino's seeks a new leader.
The outgoing executive, who served at Domino's for over 20 years, had attempted to redirect Britain's leading pizza delivery company towards poultry-based products, commenting recently there was not “huge potential” left in the British pizza industry. He said poultry was the quickest rising food category in the globe.
Governance Tensions
Reports indicate that there was disagreement between the CEO and the governance team over his focus and business vision, although the company's official statement said he was leaving “as a joint decision”.
Recent Product Launch
In the autumn, Domino's introduced its poultry brand – which Rennie referred to as a “bold new chapter” for the organization – and is testing it in 210 outlets in the North West region and Northern Ireland.
While the company is still intending to launch it across its nearly 1,400 branches in 2026 as scheduled, it regards fried chicken as an addition to its core pizza business.
Leadership Statement
The Domino's chair, the Domino's chairman, stated: “Directors think that there are a number of opportunities to boost expansion and performance improvement in our primary operations. We are focused on identifying the suitable leader to lead the systematic rollout of that expansion plan.”
Market Difficulties
Recently, the pizza delivery giant, which has 13 million customers in the UK and Ireland, said sales fell by 1.5 percent in the Q3. In August, it warned that the food delivery sector had “become tougher” as it blamed reduced spending in the lead-up to the budget and increasing labor expenses for below-target performance and a 15 percent decline in interim earnings.
Competitors are also facing challenges. Another major chain disclosed the closing of multiple locations a last month, after the business behind its British operations faced financial collapse.
Health Initiatives
Trying to keep up with market shifts towards healthier eating, Domino's has rolled out light items, such as its light base line of bakes below 400 kcals as well as meat-free and wheat-free options. A large pepperoni pizza has 2,311 calories. A large cheese and tomato pizza has 2,171, while a individual has under 1,000 calories.
Acting Leadership
Nicola Frampton has been with Domino's since the recent past, and previously worked for the gambling company a well-known operator. It is thought that she prefers not to occupy the chief executive role long-term.
She commented: “Our team has a multiple active expansion and efficiency programs that we will be concentrating on executing at pace.”
Frampton noted these included ongoing development on the company's procurement system and menu innovation, and its loyalty scheme.
Domino's is also lacking a full-time CFO until 16 March, when a new appointee starts from the Irish cider and beer maker C&C Group. Until then, Snow acts as temporary CFO.
