Hamilton Island, a Iconic Queensland Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by American Investment Giant.
An iconic tropical holiday destination located on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based investment group for a sum said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to build on the vision and dedication that the family owners has built in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family, subject to customary approvals from regulators.
The sellers issued a comment noting they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island covers over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the area is developed, featuring a substantial array of amenities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
The resort is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a wide network of local partners, vendors, and area businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The late Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's development boom first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to simple iron huts and modest accommodations that hosted domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and from the south.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Local Heritage
Blackstone also owns hotels and luxury resorts in multiple countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
