‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s road from gurney to success with the Basque club
The debut appearance the Athletic striker featured in England, an 18-year-old appearing for the youth squad against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at Adams Park in September 2015, he found the net. The second time he appeared in England, against the Black Cats weeks after, he converted. Another occasion, against the Citizens not long later, indeed, he scored again. As he revisited to Manchester to face United at the sports complex in 2017, he scored again. An excellent finish, as well. “In fact,” he remarks, “it ranks among my finest in my career.” Therefore the team did what was necessary: they took him off.
“I became very upset,” the attacker reveals, before breaking into laughter. “I’m sure there’s footage. Our match against United and I was pretty good. They kept me out of the second half: I hadn’t yet signed my contract, I was scoring goals, many stories circulated, as you’d expect. I don’t know about the Magpies’ pursuit, but I remember reading about the Red Devils, standard transfer gossip. I’m not certain how true it was, but had they contacted me, I would have wanted to stay at Athletic. I feel lucky to be here.”
La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph
At the facility, Bilbao, the early training is set to begin; after it, the quick travel to Loiu and a further journey to England, on this occasion to face Newcastle in the Champions League on midweek. Uttering the name makes Guruzeta smile. This is proving a tough year for the club, due in part to the requirements of their participation. Defeated late on in the weekend clash, they have managed just one win of their past eight league games and been defeated by Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in Europe. However, look at the overall situation, the big nights he has lived and upcoming events, and he feels a calm gratitude within him.
In the 36 months since he had come back to Athletic, Guruzeta has been a Europa League semi-finalist, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by the English giants, and has boarded a decades-old barge up the Nervión estuary flanked by countless supporters after lifting the trophy, the first title in 40 years. Currently he stands as Athletic’s top scorer in the UCL, where they are distinctive and returning after absence in a long period. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he states.
The player believed it challenging enough just to break into the senior squad and he was right. Born to the former Real Sociedad player Xabi Guruzeta and a season ticket holder at the opposition side, Guruzeta is from the Antiguoko academy, the local academy that produced the coach, the former star and the tactician. He signed for Athletic at 17 but after making his senior debut in the 2018 season, he suffered a torn cruciate, dropped, a drop in category and a call back before he could earn his place, returning at 26 to live the best days of his career.
“Joining the setup not expecting to reach the senior squad but with every stage you progress through you’re still there and you can see it getting closer. You make it and … departure is necessary.” He had limited game time in half a dozen appearances between his bow and February 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances with them and my knee gave way.
“It was a huge blow but I reflect on it as something positive because it shifted the way I saw things. Recovering from a long-term injury is difficult, but it aids growth. You adopt practices previously lacking. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I would go to training and then head home, as a youngster does. In the facility, you have everything, so do everything. Work, precaution. Hit the weights. If your hips aren’t balanced, work on that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, enhance it further. Every small aspect: do them.
“In the first team you’re going to face physical challenges who have been in battles 200,000 times. Highly robust. Reviewing old images: my legs are chicken legs. So what happens, happens. Current photos and it’s totally different. The setback taught me. Practice concludes, but there’s more to do. Peers are prepared, really ready; no exceptions.”
You also have to play. The striker moved emotionally in that year, at 23 years old, joining the second tier. With Sabadell in 2020-21, he netted three goals in forty appearances. During his Amorebieta stint in the second half of 2021-22, the he found his form. “Many experience this: loans, terminated contracts. With a turnaround, effort, faith, and when eventually the requirement appears for your role, recall is possible. You have to be ready. When they decided to call again, it was a dream come true. Lifting the cup, play in Europe, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”
Understandably he remarks savor the moment. All the more so after the prior campaign which, at times, was focused on persistence. After being leading scorer with sixteen goals, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
