Daughter of Ex- South African Head of State Zuma Refutes Terror Charges as Court Case Commences

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla in court
The defendant has claimed that the state's case against her is unsubstantiated

The child of former South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma has denied all charges to terror allegations at the beginning of her legal proceedings in the coastal city of the city of Durban.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being tried over comments she posted on social media in the past during violent unrest in South Africa that came after the detention of her father.

A week of anarchy in several parts of the country in mid-2021, including theft and arson, caused at least three hundred killed and resulted in damage worth an estimated $2.8bn (£2.2bn).

The defendant has been charged of fuelling this unrest and confronts accusations of provocation to commit terrorism and public disorder.

Background of the Case

The demonstrations were concentrated in the provinces of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal and came after the ex-leader's arrest for defying a court order to testify at an inquiry into claims of graft while he was holding office.

She has always denied the accusations against her, with her attorney in the past describing the government's legal argument as insufficient.

She has also consistently stated the accusations against her were an effort to resolve political grievances with her parent after he started his own party and campaigned against the ANC.

Endorsement and Legal Defense

This was echoed by the foundation, which stated the case was an "misuse of authority" and a "systematic campaign" of "politically motivated and family-related persecution" against the previous head of state and his kin.

A handful of supporters from her political organization, uMkhonto weSizwe, appeared outside the provincial high court, while her dad and other party leaders were present at the proceedings inside.

Her legal team has stated that the testimony presented by the state is insufficient and does not have substantial evidence for a guilty verdict.

Key Points of the Case

  • Social media comments from 2019 form the basis of the state's case
  • Fatal protests in July 2021 resulted in significant deaths and financial destruction
  • The accused confronts multiple counts of provocation to public disorder
  • Legal proceedings are expected to carry on for several weeks

The trial continues as both sides present their cases before the judge in what is expected to be a highly monitored judicial process with substantial politically charged implications for South Africa.
