Aaron Rai Wins Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
Aaron Rai displayed exceptional nerve to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating his compatriot in a tense playoff after a topsy-turvy final round of competition.
Rai nailed a decisive birdie from around eight foot to clinch the win, echoing his sole prior tournament success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff victory against the same opponent.
Sunday's Play Excitement
The champion entered the last day with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of 263 after a up-and-down, five-under closing round that featured seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger edged a stroke clear with two holes to play after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last green.
Play-Off Decider
That set up a play-off at Yas Links where Rai triumphed to claim the title and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even more person. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was really special,” stated Rai, the current world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s difficult to describe at the moment how it feels. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”
Notable Contenders
The Northern Irish star found himself a bit too far to do, finishing one shot short in a shared third place with the Dane, after a stunning 62 final round of ten-under. It was his lowest-ever score on the DP World Tour, including eight birdies and one eagle.
Højgaard fired six birdies of his own, but his chances of topping the leaderboard were hit by a bogey on the 12th. English golfer Mansell hit an excellent last round seven-under to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australian Hillier.
